Woodfired Wanderlust – a few suggestions for your holidays
If you are off on your holidays and looking for something with some woodfired cooking or even a woodfired oven you can use yourself, here are just a few of our favourites to help you out with your planning. Remember to send us a postcard and let us know of any more woodfired destinations we need to add to our list of places to visit –
If you’re heading north, up into the Orkneys, do go and visit Jon at 59 Degrees North. A business of many parts including their woodfired pizzeria using their Bushman oven, café with fabulous cakes, a motorhome and caravan park, woodfired pizza school and supplier of top notch dog food. Justifiably winners of the inaugaral Orkney Tourism Award for most innovative business.
If you’d rather be heading west and are up for some glamping away from it all, Top of the Woods could be just the thing. Each glamping unit on their farm in deepest Pembrokeshire has its own firepit so you can cook for yourselves over fire. And on top of that, there is the twice weekly woodfired pizza night cooked by the owners over the summer months under cover in the Dutch barn.
Maybe you’re planning a trip further afield. If you find yourself in north-eastern Spain on the Costa Brava, do head to the beautiful old town of Pals and more specifically to the fantastic Grava Pals café. Open in the summer months from early morning for a warm welcome, fab coffee and breakfasts right through the day for drinks and snacks and pizzas from their Valoriani woodfired oven. A big outside space to enjoy the Spanish summer evenings al fresco. Popular with locals and visitors but not to worry, you can book online.
Perhaps you’ll be travelling around New England. If you are, make a bee line for one of Connecticut’s farmers markets where our friends Frank and Max turn up with their mobile woodfired ovens every week with their awesome pizzas and specials. More on their locations on their Instagram page here. If you see them, do say hi from us.
If France is your thing then many villages have traditional village woodfired ovens which have been rebuilt and if not often in use, are often used in the village fetes. Check out your local tourist information office for details of fetes and ovens in your area. If you are looking for a place to stay, do check out Rural Gites in the beautiful Perigord who have a variety of Morso woodfired ovens for the use of guests.
And if you’d rather get hands-on and learn something, join us on one of our woodfired cooking classes here in Devon or at our venues in Edinburgh and Suffolk. Fabulous food, small groups and a relaxed atmosphere mean you’ll have a great day and head home with some new-found woodfired oven skills to put into practise at home. More on our website here.
