Location
The South Hams of South Devon is an area of exceptional beauty and contrast with river estuaries, rolling hills and thatched cottages surrounding the lovely old towns of Dartmouth, Totnes, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Modbury and Ivybridge.
The area enjoys one of the mildest climates in the whole of Britain. Indeed, the name “Hamme” is an old English word meaning enclosed or sheltered place. With Spring arriving early, long summers, warm autumns and mild winters, you can safely choose to visit at any time of year.
With sixty miles of spectacular coastline and beaches, a rural landscape that has hardly changed in centuries and the majestic granite slopes of Dartmoor, the South Hams is a unique area worthy of its national status as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The area is also a destination for anyone with an interest in food; Its produce is second to none and this has attracted many fine restaurateurs, retailers and producers.
We love it here and we’re sure you will too.
Directions
From Exeter
At the end of the M5 follow the A38 towards Plymouth.
After a couple of miles, as the road divides, take the A380 towards Torquay and Newton Abbott.
Follow this road around and over numerous sets of lights and roundabouts, passing Newton Abbott, and through our lovely new Kingkerswell bypass. You will eventually arrive at the end of the A380 at a set of lights in Paignton, go straight across these onto the A3022 and follow this road towards Brixham.
After a few more sets of lights turn right onto the A379, signposted Dartmouth – just after the Texaco garage; don’t go straight on otherwise you’ll end up in Brixham. Follow this up and over a hill to a mini roundabout.
Turn right at this roundabout but take the left hand fork immediately afterwards onto the B3205.
You are now on the home stretch heading down into Kingswear. As you reach the bottom of a long hill the roads turns left and takes you up a shallow incline between trees, follow this road around a sharp left turn then a very sharp right turn. Take the left hand fork immediately after this turn into Higher Contour Road.
Fir Mount House is the first house on the right with a red door. Park immediately outside the house if space allows or alongside the hedge on your right.
Please don’t follow satnav once you’re in the village, it will take you much further on – we really are the FIRST HOUSE ON THE RIGHT!!
From Plymouth – take the A38 to the Totnes turning and then follow the directions from Totnes as above.
From Dartmouth
If coming through Dartmouth take the Lower Ferry to Kingswear.
From the ferry follow the road up hill and fork left towards Torbay and Brixham. Follow this road to a T Junction and turn right.
This road takes you up a shallow incline between trees, follow this road around a sharp left turn then a very sharp right turn. Take the left hand fork immediately after this turn into Higher Contour Road.
Fir Mount House is the first house on the right.
Park immediately outside the house if space allows or alongside the hedge on your right.
If you are walking from Dartmouth, get on the passenger ferry or Lower Ferry and come over the river. Walk up the hill to the Village Shop. Go past the shop and carry on up Lower Contour Road with Chris Hoyle Marine on your left and the village school on your right. Carry on up the road until you get to the junction with Higher Contour Road. Turn right into Higher Contour Road and walk about 100 yards – we are the first house on the right with a red door.
